Translation issues: "turned"

Question

En Buenos Aires y en toda Argentina, Rosas, el criollo aristócrata TURNED gaucho, y sus federalistas aterrorizaban y mataban a los que no estaban de acuerdo con sus ideas y su régimen.

Entiendo que eso probablemente no se va a traducir cómo lo quiere, pero ¿alguien tenga una idea para el uso de "turned" en esa frase?

Thanks for the suggestions. Hacerse gaucho isn't really what I'm going for, but it's probably the closest I'm going to get. It's not that he turned himself into a gaucho really---he abandoned his upbringing and started running around killing people. - slkey, Apr 26, 2012

I think its "...se hizo gaucho," but I'm going to wait for more answers.

Se volvió loco -> Se volvió gaucho... That's clever. But I guess if that could be done, it would support that he just suddenly changed and started killing people. I can't find "volverse" with a noun, but "gaucho" can be an adjective. - GuitarWarrior, Apr 26, 2012

I think so, too, Guitar. Slkey, if you put "turn" into the translator and then scroll all the way to the bottom, you'll see some examples of "turn" and "become." I think that's probably the sense you're looking for.
