Because, historically, societies and cultures became established in isolation and only gradually began to come in contact with one another. So, different languages grew up in different areas. The Romance languages have much in common because peoples in those areas were geographically close to one another.

Reminder of Romance Languages: Latin, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese. - SaigeSmith, Apr 23, 2012
Romance languages are similar because all those counties were once part of the Roman Empire. When they did business with Rome they spoke in Latin but the romance languages evolved in different directions to regional differences. - jwalling42, May 2, 2012
Right, jwalling, Vulgar Latin, though, not Classical Latin. Even the non-Romance languages, like German, include some words of Latin origin. Fun stuff, huh? :-) - babs_irish, May 2, 2012

I like babs_irish's answer! Also you can look at the cultures themselves. Take French, for example. The french language is very flowing and smooth. French art is sofisticated and painted with elegant strokes. French food is savory. French music (classical-impressionist) follows the flow of the language. The language reflects the culture, as does the food, art, and music. Another example is German. The German language is rhythmic, precise and gutteral. German music (take hymns for example) is not flowing, but choppy. This is because the language reflects in the music. German food is meant to fill you up. I could give more examples (Irish, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, etc.) Think about all the cultures and languages of the world, and think of how the language, food, art, and music all reflect each other.

Well, you're the closet to the right answer. God made people speak different languages to break up the building of Babel because they were disobeying his command to spread out through the entire earth. :)) - t1funnyface, Apr 26, 2012
Jeje... I know the real story... tower of Babel to heaven... but most people can't relate to that. Much more interesting though. =] - DJ_Huero, Apr 27, 2012

It is impossible.Although it is impossible,I think that the english is a dominate language,a world language. It is used in north and south american states,in european states, in asian states and in Australia.Everybody know to say ''how are you?'',but a few know what ''Wie geht's dir?'' means.Wie geht's dir? means in german ''How are you?''.If you want to navigate on the internet, you have to understand english.Although the english is a dominat language,it cannot replace the other languages. The spanishes always will say that el jamón is jamón .They never will say el jamón is ham.Who didn't eat jamón,he could say jamón is ham. This example is an argument,my argument which says it impossible for a dominante language to replace the other languages. It is true,my example is not a philosophic one.The diversity means curiosity and beauty too.

Es imposible.Aunque es imposible, creo que el ingles es una lengua dominante, una lengua mundial.Se usa en estados norteamericanos y suramericanos,en estados europeos,en estados asiáticos y en Australia.Todos saben decir '' how are you?'', pero pocos saben qué semnifica ''Wie geht's dir?''. Wie geht's dir? semnifica en alemán ''How are you?''

When you say "dominant language" one could say it's already there, and it's English. The most obvious point is this.

You and your colony spent your entire lives on Mars

My colony and I spent our entire lives on Saturn

And everyone else spent their entire lives on Uranus

We have NO language to start with.

How likely would it be that we somehow end up speaking the same "language" using the same patterns to communicate. The same thought process in expressing every thought... the same writing system...

It's not likely at all is it?

Well, the world wasn't always traveled with "ease" ...the world wasn't always thought to be round either... and different people, from different lands, developed different sets of speech patterns to communicate with one another. Many languages are linked however, based primarily of course on proximity.

It's a rather cut and dry subject.

Simple, language is learn not instinct and in order to learn most humans need to become in contact while the brain still developing. Im not sayings it cant be learn later in life, it just take a lot of work. The whole world would have to agree on one and mostly talk to all xhildren in the world using that language. Simple, thats why.

If someone had conquered the world, we may have one language. What language people speak often follows on from who they were conquered by, in the case where they speak a language not native to the area. An example of this would be the spread of English across the globe. English is not an easy language to learn by any means, and most likely is only spoken widely because of conquest (North America, the British Empire etc).

Having added that, I also agree with what Babs_Irish said. Conquest, trade and common origin are, to me, why similar languages are spoken in different areas.

It would be a good idea like my Spanish teacher said.

"A perfect language"

No irregulares, masc o fem, o otras cosas.

The world isn't perfect though. I've made lots of friends having to ask questions about different nuances of languages. Although a perfect language would be perfectly easy to learn. :) - JoshuaBelden, Apr 23, 2012
