"Gato" is pronounced "GAH-toh" (The stress is on the first syllable).
The "g" is just like a hard "g" sound in English- like in the word "goat". The "a" is like "ah" as in father. In Spanish, there is a bit of s softer "t" sound than in English; place the tip of your tongue more on the backs of your front teeth than on the roof of your mouth, almost like a hard "th" sound as in "the". The "o" is like "oh" the exclamation, only cut off--that is, without the "w" sound that English speakers tend to add at the end.
