A little help with phonetic symbols

Have you ever looked up a word in the dictionary and seen some funny looking symbols after the word but you've had no idea what they mean or what they're there for?
If so, I have just written a short article that I hope will be useful 
A special thank you to Martha for allowing me to share a little of what I've been working on lately here, with the aim of being an added resource to help others as we all endeavour to learn another language, be it English or Spanish
