These words appear to be totally synonymous - to replace and/ or substitute; Are there any contexts where they are used differently?

I have a different opinion. Sustuir means to substitute. Something(anything will substitue or take the place of something else.
Reemplazar means to replace. Re-place( to put something or someone in the same place, or position.)

For the definition you gave I guess remplazar and replace are not the same, even when the translators show it in that way. Its confusing but I have a different spanish word for replace ( recolocar) not very common - benjoz80, Apr 21, 2012
