"Esta" refers to, or modifies, "familia" which is a fem. word. "Este" refers to, or modifies, "gato" which is a masc. word.

they both mean "this" butwhen you use masculine words you would use este and feminine words you use esta

That's because familia is feminine and gato is masculine. So, familia takes the article "LA". But gato takes "EL". Then, notr form of "this" is "ESTO", masculine form is "ESTE" and feminine form is "ESTA". So when you talk about feminine nouns, you must use "ESTA", if you are talking about masculine nouns, you need to use "ESTE".

Good luck amigo!
