If i want to say to somebody thank you for your help which one should it be

gracias por tu ayuda

OR

gracias para tu ayuda

i am having difficulty differentiating when to use "POR" and when to use "PARA"

is there a set of rules that defines which one to use when ?

One use of POR is to mean for as in 'in exchange for'. This concept works with giving thanks as well - you are giving your thanks in exchange for their help, so gracias is always followed by por instead of para. smile

Pagué cinco dólares por este vestido.

I paid $5 for this dress.

Gracias por tu ayuda.

Thank you for your help.

¿Cien dólares por eso?

A hundred dollars for that?

And here's another link that may help smile
