la zona (soh'-nah)

noun ( zone, area )

Caefuego is the official corrector of the Spanish sentences. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Please correct your posts according to Caefuego's suggestions.

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. Then the Word of the Day winner will be chosen!

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. Los niños del barrio declararon este árbol una zona neutral.

The neighborhood kids declared this tree a neutral zone.

2. ¿Vives por la zona?

Do you live around here?

Correction:

En los E.E.U.U.hace muchos años los bancos utilizaban una práctica llamada "demarcación en rojo" en la que identificaban una zona de la ciudad donde vivía gente negra y donde ellos no harían préstamos. Esta práctica se considera discriminatoria y hoy en día es ilegal.

In the United States for many years banks used a practice called "redlining," in which they identified a zone of the city where black people lived and where they would not make loans. This practice is considered discriminatory and is now illegal.

enter image description here

Historical Significance In 1936, the federal government established HOLC to inventory and grade all residential areas throughout the nation. HOLC hired appraisers and surveyors to assign a "grade" on a scale from "A" to "D" for residential homes. Red was the color used for the "D" grade--thus, the term "red-lining." If a neighborhood received a "D" grade, mortgage lenders often refused to make loans to properties within the neighborhood. The appraiser looked at such factors as building decay, neglect, and a neighborhood's racial and ethnic make-up. If African Americans, Jews, and the foreign-born lived in the neighborhood, the appraiser downgraded the area for mortgage insurance. HOLC produced hundreds of maps--viewed only by federal government officials and senior bank managers.

Life is an unusual combination of many zones, some of them are of happiness and some others are of sorrow. No zone is endless in your life.

Most of the countries, even cities are devided into more zones. Some zones are even very surpising.

Correct: En la mayoría de países, las cuidades están divididas en varias zonas. E incluso algunas de estas zonas son muy sorprendentes.
