The imperfect was habitual or started in the past but is touching the present.

The preterit was done in the past and was completed. grammar lesson on imperfect

You can enter "preteret and imperfect" in the search box under "ask a question" and you will get many more answers from the many, many threads and questions posted on this subject.

There are also several video lessons on this under the 'learn' section.
