Hi TRP12 ~

Hmm, I have studied 10 foreign languages, and while each one is easier than the last, I must admit that none have been 'easy' to learn.

But, I think that you are actually lucky in that you have a friend who will talk Spanish with you and that will help a lot.

What I have learned is to first get a basic understanding of some of the simple grammar. For Spanish, that means learning about the basics of masculine and feminine nouns and how the adjectives generally take different endings based on the gender of the noun and whether the noun is singular or plural.

The next step is to learn the basic conjugation of the verbs. We in English have things pretty easy, since most verbs have only two conjugations in the present tense, such as 'I see', 'you see', 'we see', 'they see', versus 'he sees' , 'she sees' and 'it sees'. (The verb 'to be', however, is different -- 'I am', 'you are', 's/he is", etc. )

Spanish, on the other hand, has distinct conjugations for for 1st, 2nd and 3rd person, and for singular and plural. As a result, in Spanish, the noun can often be left out, since it is implied by the conjugated form of the verb. One of the nice things about Spanish is that verbs come in three forms -- those that end in 'ar', those that end in 'er' and those that end in 'ir'.

Conjugations are relatively regular, but there are changes in spellings for some verbs, which generally follow patterns, but not always.

The third step that I highly recommend is to make paper flash cards or buy some or to use the flash card maker on the SpanishDict page. And, while it is helpful to memorize the meanings, to truly learn, you will need to write and speak the language. Your Spanish speaking friend will both provide an incentive and help you progress in this area.

One way that people learn is by watching TV or movies. I especially like a telenovela series called Destinos, which progressively advances from English and simple Spanish into more and more real world Spanish. It is available for free viewing at http://learner.org/series/destinos/. Perhaps your friend could watch with you and help you out. There's also a book that you can get at local libraries or Interlibrary Loan.

Enjoy learning the language!

John

www.studyspanish.com - it will introduce you to most grammar points www.123teachme.com - it will amp up your vocab (and give mild grammar cues) www.albalearning.com - there you can read English side by side with Spanish translation.

Download pimsleur from frostwire I guess... a fun little listening practice.. where you are called to listen and repeat.

The chat here can at times be very helpful. Those sites I've post are the ones to start with.

Take your time... be methodical, and with friends to speak with you in Spanish... you'll have a good learning system.

Good luck Charlie.

Basic conjugations and an emphasis on nouns would get you speaking right away. Many things in Spanish can be expressed with "I go, (s)he goes, you go, we go, they go." This allows one to express both future and present..."I will go to the market tomorrow" can be stated more simply as "I go to the market tomorrow." Thus, "voy all mercado manana" is entirely understood. Understanding basic verbs and nouns, especially nouns, allows for an entry into conversation. Expand your vocabulary before you take pains to learn verb conjugations, and you can get by as you learn past tense, future tense, and the other tenses that express different types of action.
