cobrar (koh-brar')

verb ( to charge, to collect; to earn, to be paid )

Link: instructions post picture

Caefuego is the official corrector of the Spanish sentences. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Please correct your posts according to Caefuego's suggestions.

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. Then the Word of the Day winner will be chosen!

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish

Examples

1: Nos cobraron $100 por un día en la estación de esquí.

They charged us $100 for one day at the ski resort.

2: ¿Me cobra, por favor?

I'd like to pay now, please.

Nos han cobrado demasiado por estos vestidos, pero sin duda vale la pena.

Thanks to Rac:

They have charged us too much for these dresses, but it is definitely worth.

"Me pregunto por qué abuelita mira la rosa marchita en el viejo libro de esa manera ¿Lo sabes? Por qué, cuando las lágrimas de la abuelita caen sobre la flor, los colores cobran vida, la rosa revive y toda la sala se impregna de su aroma" - Abuelita by Hans Christen Andersen

I wonder why Grandmother looks at the wilted rose in the old book in that manner/way? Do you know? Why, when the tears of grandmother fall upon the flower, the colors come to life, the rose revives and all the room is filled of it's aroma. - Grandmother by Hans Christen Andersen

I see you are getting braver to post with more difficult sentences and tenses. Good for you. - katydew, Apr 15, 2012
In English, one normally says, "... they charge you too much." I think this is used in Spanish, too, "... se te cobran ..." ?? - Lector_Constante, Apr 15, 2012
Mmm, "se te cobran" no funcionaría muy bien aquí a menos que digas " pero a veces se te cobra demasiado por ella" - -cae-, Apr 16, 2012
Thank you Carlos! :):) - rac1, Apr 16, 2012

En mi opinión, no deberíamos tener que pagar para aprender un nuevo idoma. Por eso es que SpanishDict es muy admirable y el mejor - ¡no nos cobran nada!

In my opinion, we shouldn't have to pay to learn a new language. That is why SpanishDict is very admirable and the best - they don't charge us anything!

To collect/to earn generally implies asking for money from someone who owes it because of any reason. It may happen because that money were lended or there was / is / is going to be an exchange of merchandise or services for money that have not being paid, and asking for this money is what should be done to received a payment. The action is performed by the person who is going to receive the money or an intermediary. However the verb "cobrar" has also other uses that not necessary involve money when used in another contexts.

Mi problema economico se entiende con facilidad, es que mis ingresos no cubren mis gastos. Voy a perdirle asesoría a Gringo, porque no cobra nada.

My economic problem is easy to understand, my income doesn't cover my expenses. I'll ask Gringo's advice, because he doesn't charge for it.

Well, in Spanish we say "Cárguelo a mi tarjeta" but you could say "Cóbrelo de aquí/esta" and then you give the credit card to you purchase can be charged. In this way "aquí" is the credit card, even when "aquí" is a adverb of place. - -cae-, Apr 15, 2012
