Ayuda con una frase..."the line" y "may as well"

Quiero decir (recordando un dia cuando buceamos)
"Holding on to the line for dear life, we may as well have been on the moon"
Lo que no se es como decir "line" en el sentido de una cuerda que agarrabamos al descender para que no nos llevara el corriente.
Tambien necesito ayuda con expresar el concepto de "we may as well have been..."
