Why is another "la" after the word "cena" used again in the following sentence?

La cena la sirven hasta las once.

Gracias.

It is the pronoun referring back to the dinner.

In english we would just say, dinner is served until 11 o clock. In Spanish direct and indirect object pronouns are used to identify what is being spoken about. I think it removes some of the confusion you can get in English, but it is not intuitive to us either.

I'm not sure if there is a spanishdict video on pronouns, but I'm sure they have something on it. I found the subjunctive one v useful as it's another area that isn't intuitive for native english speakers.

Sorry I should have added, that in English the literal translation becomes, "the dinner they serve it until 11". Wherever there is an it in the english, you will have a lo/la in spanish - riazahmad, Apr 13, 2012
