Is the subjunctive used within a question?

Hola!

I wonder whether the subjunctive is used in a question... To make things more clear Let me present the next two questions:

¿Recomiendes que tomamos vitaminas? or ¿Recomiendes que tomemos vitaminas?

¿Estás seguro que no eres el jefe? or ¿Estás seguro que no seas el jefe?

I do not know which of them should be used

Muchas gracias y saludos

The subjunctive is always used regardless of whether it's simply a statement or a question.

As long as "que" is written after the verb which indicates the subjunctive mood (i.e. anything in that comes under the W.E.I.R.D.O. categories - including "Ojalá" which is the only one that doesn't always have to be followed by "que"), the verb that would follow "que" will be conjugated to the subjunctive to suit it.

So to answer your question, the second versions of both questions are correct (except the first one should say "Recomiendas" not "Recomiendes").

"¿Recomiendas que tomemos vitaminas?" means that the focus is on the fact that "tú/you" might recommend the vitamins to us because it's what you suggest.

The same goes for "¿Estás seguro que no seas el jefe?" - the focus is on the whether "tú/you" are sure that you're not the boss. It is uncertain.

Hope this helps!

And for more info, a similar question was asked on here already which Lazarus, a native speaker, answered - here

Moh1, I am not a native speaker of Spanish, but I would say that vanecessary gave the correct answer. In my "WEIRDO" chart, "seguro" is one of the verbs under the "D" - "doubt, demand, deny" that, when followed by "que", require the subjunctive tense to follow the "que". So I would say "¿Estás seguro de que no seas el jefe?" is correct.

hola amigos!

Here I have two different answers, regarding the second the second question, and both are correct:

¿Estás seguro de que no eres el jefe?

¿Estás seguro de que no seas el jefe?

I wonder whether both are correct indeed, or simply I miss something here that related to subjunctive mood....I hope somebody could tell which one is correct, or perhaps both are correct?

Muchas gracias y saludos
