The words gente and gobierno always use verbs in singular. For example- el gobierno no hizo nada, or, la genre es pobres. Does this apply to all collective words such as policia or grupo. For example- me gust el grupo Florence y la maquina, es muy bien.

First, I corrected some of your errors in bold.

Yes, it does. Familia is another one. Even though you may be referring to your 10-person family, it is still singular and conjugated as such.

You are right in your conjugation of the musical group as well. Even though the band might be comprised of several members, it is still "un grupo" and therefore singular. "It is a good group", not "they are a good group."

And I changed it to "bueno" not "bien" because you are saying good, as in, the adjective good. "Bien" is an adverb and wouldn´t work here. You are trying to say the quality of the group is good, so it is ser+bueno
