amargo (ah-mar'-go)

adjective ( bitter, tart; unsweetened )

Caefuego is the official corrector of the Spanish sentences. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Please correct your posts according to Caefuego's suggestions.

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The sentence with the most votes will be crowned the Word of the Day winner!

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. Esa conversación con él me dejó un sabor amargo.

That conversation with him left a bitter taste in my mouth.

2. Hice una torta amarga y no me sabe bien.

I made an unsweetened cake and it didn't taste good to me.

I always wanted to pour the sweet wine of love into your cup of life; but now, the unseen hands of destiny have put too much tannin into it and it has thus become bloody and bitter / Yo siempre quería que te podía verter el dulce vino del amor en tu copa de la vida; pero ahora, las manos invisibles del destino han puesto demasiado tanino en mi vino, y así, se ha hecho sangriento y amargo.

We can not always have what we want. Sometimes life is unfair and bitter. But it is life. After a bad time, a good time comes. Life is like a swing. Once you are up, the other time you are down. But do not worry, because then you will stand up and walk through your life with confidence, strongly and happily...

- -cae-, Apr 12, 2012
"Sin embargo, así es la vida" o "Pero así es la vida" o "Pero es la vida". - -cae-, Apr 12, 2012
Cae, gracias muchísimas!!! :)))) - iana01, Apr 12, 2012
"Después del mal tiempo, viene el bueno". - -cae-, Apr 12, 2012

Frío amargo is an expression which exists but the meaning is slightly different to the one you need, even though you could use in poetry. In this case, in Spanish you should say "frío penetrante" or "frío glacial". - -cae-, Apr 12, 2012

No quiero amargarme y por éso evito las bebidas amargas y bebo solamente el vino tinto y el agua. Como verían,me sirve bien.

I don't want to become embittered and therefore I avoid bitter drinks and I drink only red wine and water. As you might see, it works well for me.

Gracias a Carlos:

La palabra más usada en las bodas de mi país es "amargo". De esa manera los asistentes invitan a los novios a besarse. Esta es una tradición muy antigua. Nadie recuerda que significa exactamente. Dicen que es un saludo - a partir de ahora la vida de los novios sería dulce.

Here in my area on the wedding day the most frequently heard word is "bittersweet". That way guests invite the newlyweds to kiss each other. This is a very ancient tradition. Nobody remember what exactly this custom means. They say it is a greeting - from now on the newlyweds' life to be sweet.
