Press or Push

In the USA, we typically say "press the button".

I was getting on an elevator in Miami and a Spanish speaker said to me "push the button"
Which makes me wonder. In Spanish, is it more common to say "push the button"?

Puedes decir ambos: "Oprime o pulsa" (push) or "Presiona" (press) el botón.

I don't think it is uncommon to say (in English) "press" or "push" the button in an elevator.

Sometimes people in my area say "hit" as in "Can you hit 5 for me?" In Spanish, I would probably stick with "press" or "push."

I live in Texas, and I always say "push the button." I would never say "press."
