la ventana (ven-tah'-nah)

noun ( window; nostril )

Caefuego is the official corrector of the Spanish sentences. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Please correct your posts according to Caefuego's suggestions.

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The sentence with the most votes will be crowned the Word of the Day winner!

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. Tiré la araña por la ventana.

I threw the spider out of the window.

2. ¿Limpiaste las ventanas? Todavía parecen ensuciadas.

Did you clean the windows? They still look dirty.

When referring to window cleaning, well in Spain at least they say limpiar los cristales, so ¿Has limpiado los cristales? - kenwilliams, Apr 7, 2012
You can use a more generic form and say limpiar las ventanas because the glass and the frames are usually cleaned - francobollo, Apr 7, 2012

I was taught in Spanish Class in college that it is considered rude to use a personal possessive adjectives (his, her, my) when referring to body parts. So in Spanish, would not the phrase be "Los ojos son las ventanas de la alma" ? - Esteban3304, Apr 7, 2012
that depens on what context are you using it. this sentence seems right to me - alej21, Apr 7, 2012

What an unusual house with big smile windows. At least the architect or owner has a sense of humor. They have even created a nose to go with the smile and eye windows. Its a happy house with a lot of laughs.

¡Qué casa tan inusual con ventanas de sonrisas grandes! Al menos el arquitecto o el dueño tiene un sentido del humor. Ellos han creado una nariz para ir con la sonrisa y con ojos de ventanas. Es una casa feliz con muchas risas.

Me siento mal porque he empezado a aprender español, y me parece que mis frases son malas al lado de las otras respuestas.

Mira a la ventana sólo ver para al ángel hermoso en el cielo. angel in the sky

She looks at the window only to see the beautiful angel in the sky.

Ya estoy avergonzado de mi respuesta porque yo sé que no es correcta.

He leído en un articulo que las ventanas del futuro serán los monitores con cualquier tipo de vista que te gusta. En realidad, este sistema nueva estará en el mercado en julio de este año. Pero yo prefiero los buenas ventanas viejas.

Rac's correction:

I have read in an article that the windows of the future will be monitors with any kind of view that you like. Actually this new system will be on the market this July. But I prefer the good old windows.

A better English translation would be "I look out the window,". If it is a window, and you're looking out, "through" is understood and is, therefore, a bit redundant. - paulahillman, Apr 7, 2012

When I studied German, one of the first sentences I learned was: "Vier Bäume stehen vor dem Fenster" which is to say, "Four trees stand before the window" which sounds kind of funny; we would probably say "There are four trees in front of the window"

Hay cuatro árboles delante de la ventana
