Baja California Sur License Plate

Baja California Sur License Plate

Sanlee posted this picture in her recent thread and it reminded me of an odd fact. See below the plate numbers it says. BCS MEX. Well this is called a national plate. This car can go anywhere in Mexico. The other type says BCS FRONT. This is called a frontier plate A car with this plate is only legal in Baja (north or south) but cannot go to the mainland. Just one example of the way even Mexico treats baja like a foreign country. Which is funny but actually good as Baja remains very open and unspoiled.

what part of Baja will you be going? - Ranman, Apr 5, 2012
I will be returning to La Paz where I previously lived for 4 years and which I consider home. - gringojrf, Apr 5, 2012
I hope you will be happy in La Paz, and you will stay in touch with U.S. lol - pmikan-pam, Apr 5, 2012

Hello this is because not all the American cars can be imported. According to Mexican laws cars not older than 8 years can be imported and must be assembled in USA. If the cars are not allowed to be imported they may show frontier plates. Please vote me up to gain reputation. Thanks.

There you go buddy:) - Ranman, Apr 5, 2012
You are correct. ...Not all cars can be imported (to mainland Mexico) but they can be ïmported"to Baja and stay there forever. Thus the split in rules for Baja and the rest of Mexico. - gringojrf, Apr 5, 2012
I agree with that. Regards. - juanm_velazquez, Apr 5, 2012
