hembra (em'-brah)

adjective ( female )

Link: instructions to post pictures

Caefuego is the official corrector of the Spanish sentences. There are many native English speakers here, most of us can offer great suggestions to the English sentences. I will do my best to go through them all, too. Please correct your posts according to Caefuego's suggestions.

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The sentence with the most votes will be crowned the Word of the Day winner!

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. Prefería una perrita hembra y blanca.

I would prefer a white female puppy.

2. Tienes que encontrar el conector macho para esta parte hembra.

You have to find the male connector for this female part.

I think they blame me for the word hembra, but that was the word on the site. - rac1, Apr 3, 2012
Not your fault. And you still took the time to post it.... - 00cdfbd9, Apr 3, 2012
Thank you Kat, but I feel really bad about it.:( - rac1, Apr 3, 2012
Well, you shouldn't! :| It's not such a big deal anyway. - 00cdfbd9, Apr 3, 2012
We all good. :D - 00cdfbd9, Apr 3, 2012
Rac, no importa, las palabras son interesantes, ni siquiera... - annierats, Apr 3, 2012
Hay que notar que decir "perra hembra" es una redundancia. Habría que decir "Prefería una perrita y que sea blanca". - -cae-, Apr 3, 2012
I suspect that we have all learned somewhat more than we would have had it not gone a bit awry. I know I have. - bosquederoble, Apr 3, 2012
Again, I do thank you all for your help. I post what the site gives me to post. I have reported this to Paralee and I am sorry for any inconvenience or annoyance this has caused. - rac1, Apr 3, 2012
He aprendido algo importante de esta palabra. Gracias, rac por este oportunudad. - Noetol, Apr 3, 2012
you're very sweet Noetol!:) - rac1, Apr 3, 2012
Quise decir "Preferiría una perrita...". "Prefería" sería valido en pasado, pero "I would prefer" debería traducirse como "Yo preferiría". - -cae-, Apr 3, 2012

I hate to say this, but the word "hembra" has not been used correctly in many sentences here in this thread.

  • On the other hand, the word "hembra" in Spanish, has a "Sexual" connotation. That is why it is not quite okay to refer to a woman as an "hembra"
  • In Spanish we have the direct, explicit male of female word for genders and the used of "hembra" does not go well with them. There are some animals or things that do not have a gender attached to them and that would be the perfect place for such two words, "Hembra and Macho"
  • Águila = El águila hembra or El Águila macho.
  • Adaptadores (Ferretería) = Adaptors (Hardware store) = Necesito un adaptador PVC hembra/macho de 1/2 pulgada para acueducto.
  • Buey (Ox) = La hembra del buey está enferma.
  • ¡La perra tuvo una camada de 8 perros! ¡5 hembras y 3 machos!
  • To say el ratón hembra, el perro hembra, el caballo hembra, etc. is incorrect because they have their proper, distinct gender words. It is pretty much like saying, La perra macho, La ratona macho o la Yegua macho.

El diccionario indica "2 (mujer) woman; female hembra female cinco hijos: dos varones y tres hembras five children: two boys and three girls ". Por eso, estoy un poco confuso. - Noetol, Apr 3, 2012
Te entiendo bien, ' el varron hembra' es un insulto grande, creo? - annierats, Apr 3, 2012
Gracias por publicar esto. Era muy necesario hacer esta aclaración. - -cae-, Apr 3, 2012
Con mucho gusto caefuego! - farallon7, Apr 3, 2012
Noel, the words hembra and macho are normally used to refer to animals. Not always, but 99%. Because in Spanish there are specific words for male or female, (Gato, gate) you would not say, "gato hembra" but "gata" Do not always compare it with English! - farallon7, Apr 3, 2012
Thanks for this post Farallon. We often make such errors because we don't get extended explanations of the words. - shama807, Apr 3, 2012
When you meet someone in the street and ask about their dog that you do not know is male or female. ¿es hembra o macho? But once you know then it is perro o perra. - gringojrf, Apr 3, 2012
Well, this is a good lesson in words that don't translate exactly. I had heard this about hembra for animals, but there must be a link where we can go to learn more. I'm sure there are old posts about this? I'll check. - katydew, Apr 4, 2012
Thanks, Farallon, for explanation. - iana01, Apr 4, 2012

No confunda la nariz de este cerdo hembra con la hembra de corriente. Don’t confuse the nose of this female pig with the electrical outlet.

Hi Francobollo, I thought "cerdo" was masculine and not both masculine and feminine. That's why I said, "este cerdo hembra". Would you explain where I went wrong? Thank you for all your hard work. It is so appreciated. - Nilda-Ballardo, Apr 4, 2012

We used to have a male cat, which was very fat. So we went to the vet with our fat cat. And the vet said: "Your cat is pregnant and will have little cats." We were surprised because we were sure, it was a male cat. We were waiting and waiting while the small cats were going to be born, but nothing happened. So we went to the vet again. And the vet said: " Your cat is not a female cat. It is a male cat. It is just very fat. He must be on a diet." wink

You are totally right Katy! Even though the feminine article "la" tells you that the subject is female, this is one of those cases where the subject doesn't have a specific gender attached to it, and it is perfect to say "La elefante hembra" - farallon7, Apr 4, 2012

Some women are asking for the right to go out without upper clothing to be equal to men. I think this female is one of them.

Algunas mujeres solicitan el derecho a salir sin ropa de arriba para ser igual a los hombres. Pienso que esta hembra es una de ellas. smile

Las atletas hembras necesitan tomar cuidado de las rodillas, especialmente el ACL o el ligamento cruzado anterior.

Female athletes need to take care of their knees, especially the ACL or anterior cruciate ligament.
