I thought it would be fun to share something typical from our country/culture and at the same time practice and expand our vocabulary, I’m Spanish native speaker so please correct my English (it was difficult for me to translate so I’m sure there is plenty to correct/improve) and we’ll help you out with your Spanish, maybe people from USA can share something typical from their state or area. This is a dance with a very “Tico” flavor that started to develop in the 60’s as a fusion between American swing and Columbian cumbia. In the 70’s it was already very popular and the old school dancers were getting a lot of attention with it, however it was consider as vulgar and it was related with lower class people to the point that some discos had a sign advising “No swing dancing allowed”. 40 years later an executive decree consider, among other virtues, that “such an artistic dance expression has been developed and adapted to the general taste, to the point where is now established among all social stratums of the Costa Rican society”. This dance has been popularized in every social class and its currently a referent to Costa Rican popular dance. The rhythm came to Costa Rica through the truck drivers that traveled throughout Central America
Este es un ritmo con un sabor muy "tico" que se empezó a gestarse en la década de los 60 como resultado de la fusión entre el swing estadounidense y la cumbia colombiana. Ya para la década de los 70 era muy popular y los conocidos bailarines de la "Vieja Guardia" llamaban la atención en los salones de San José; sin embargo, era tildado de vulgar e inherente a la chusma, a tal punto que en algunos salones de baile había letreros que advertían claramente: “Se prohíbe bailar swing”. Cuarenta años después, un decreto ejecutivo considera, entre otras virtudes, que “dicha expresión dancística se desarrolló y adaptó al gusto general, hasta establecerse en casi todos los estratos de la sociedad costarricense”. El baile se ha ido popularizando en todas las clases sociales y actualmente es un referente del baile popular Costarricense.El ritmo en sí, llegó a Costa Rica a través de los camioneros que viajaban por Centroamérica.

This carnival is typical for my country and it is very ancient tradition. The participants, called Cuckery, are dressed as monsters and beasts. They dance in the street in order to chase away the evil spirits, to banish the coldness and also to provide the good health, rich harvest and happiness during the year. This custom is performed only by men, mostly young men.

Este carnaval es típico de mi país y es una tradición muy antigua. Los participantes, llamados Kukeri, se visten como monstruos y bestias. Bailan por la calle para espantar los espíritus malos, alejar la frialdad y también para proveer la buena salud, cosecha abundante y felicidad a lo largo del año. En esta costumbre participan solamente hombres, en su mayoría de hombres jóvenes.
Cada verano voy con mi familia al espectáculo de fuegos artificiales en Jaffrey, New Hampshire, cerca de donde vivo. Es el mayor espectáculo de fuegos artificiales de Nueva Inglaterra. Los fuegos artificiales son sincronizados con música. Aquí les dejo un video de parte del espectáculo del año pasado.
