Use of "Habrá"

Use of "Habrá"

As I am fairly new to the language, perhaps I should not worry myself too much about this.

I decided to practise using alguien in a sentence, and checked this dictionary for examples of sentences. I came across the following sentence and its meaning, that has left me confused.

"Alguien se lo habrá dicho" - somebody or other must have told him.

I am confused because habrá is the future tense of he, she, it, usted haber. Why would the future conjugation of this verb be used for something that happened in the past. I don't understand.

Maybe if you think in terms of "someone will have told him", meaning the supposition is being made that someone, at some time must have told him the information. This construction is very commonly used to imply something "must" have been done, even though a direct translation to English seems a little clumsy.

Hi early,

Great question. The future perfect can be used in Spanish to express the meaning your phrase is conveying. Please follow this link for an explanation:
