"Lamentar" vs "Sentir"

Lamentar y sentir pueden significar "to regret". ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre las dos palabras? ¿Es la diferencia el nivel de "regret" que está sentido?

Lo siento ...... I´m sorry can be meaningless if said with a certain tone. In other words, it is often used to simply be polite. Lamentar .... to regret is used for truly expressing regret.

It seems that "lo siento" has about the same connotations as the English "sorry." It's sometimes meaningful, but sometimes it's just an expression. But nobody says "lament" or "regret" without a good reason. Likewise in Spanish, then? - arocoun, Apr 2, 2012

Hola arocoun,
Lamentar means to regret. Sentir can also mean to regret in certain cases (I regret to inform you/Siento informarle que...) but in most cases sentir means to feel. If you use lamentar all the time you will always get it right since lamentar only means to regret.
