Why are people so tight with votes? I see new people here and they ask good questions, but people do not vote for them. It's just one vote. To clear the record, I'm not talking about me. I ask questions to learn, not for votes. Please vote for people who work hard to learn. Thank you all.

Augh, not the Kate Winslet... lol - 00cdfbd9, Mar 30, 2012
It's easy to forget basic manners over the internet. I've often felt discouraged learning Spanish. Encouragement is important, and has helped me many times! Thanks! - arocoun, Mar 31, 2012
Thanks for your comment, Arocoun! I can definitely relate to that. - 00cdfbd9, Mar 31, 2012

It's good for the person asking the question to also vote for those who take time answering their questions. Since everyone is volunteering time, it's a little tangible thank you for those helping out. And for those providing our favorite threads, it's also a vote for them to continue the hard work it takes to keep a thread going everyday.

I voted for all of you. ;))) I like to vote and to say thank you when people make an effort and help me with Spanish or English. Thanks. ; )))) - iana01, Mar 30, 2012

I don't wish to appear overly harsh but are we here to learn Spanish and contribute to the learning of others or to gain votes? Surely the majortiy of people here are mature enough to be able to feel good about the progress they are making rather than being preoccupied with the number of points they have...

Furthermore, if members want the the number of votes that someone receives to actually represent the value of their contribution to this site and its members caution should be exercised when voting - allotting points to someone on the basis of them having said something, irrespective of the quality of the comment, detracts from value of having a system whereby one comments can be voted upon.

That's not my point. In order for people to have motivation it is important to have a reward. Learning Spanish is hard. Motivation is extremely important. Votes cost nothing. Don't vote for something that you don't want to, but vote for someone - 00cdfbd9, Mar 30, 2012
who tries hard to learn and also someone who thanks for the help they receive. Thanks for your comment! - 00cdfbd9, Mar 30, 2012
My goal was also not to get votes. My goal was to encourage others to be encouraging to beginners. Everyone can relate to times of feeling discouraged about their progress. If someone shows their hard work to learn a language, the least you can do is - 00cdfbd9, Mar 30, 2012
give them a vote for it. They earned it, right? - 00cdfbd9, Mar 30, 2012
Of course encouragement is important. I think it would be more useful and actually far more personal to leave comments thanking people for their efforts and leave voting for contributions that are correct, insightful, funny or otherwise add value. - afowen, Mar 30, 2012
I agree with that, but I'm just saying be generous with your votes. Thanks for your insight though. :) - 00cdfbd9, Mar 30, 2012
You have something on your chin Kat :-) - afowen, Mar 30, 2012
What does that mean? :O - 00cdfbd9, Mar 30, 2012
Well, : are your eyes and ) your mouth, I'm guessing that the - represents a bit of breakfast or something on your chin! - afowen, Mar 30, 2012
But... why? lol I haven't eaten in like 18 hours. Haha. - 00cdfbd9, Mar 30, 2012
I've just eaten 2 arepa 'e huevo, I think that my señora de aseo/auxiliar de cocina is trying to make me fat! - afowen, Mar 30, 2012
Yum. :D - 00cdfbd9, Mar 30, 2012

I have been meaning to open a thread on this very subject so thanks KatRJ .

Whenever you post an answer please give a vote to the person who has worked hard

to open a thread , and then give your votes to all your friends who in return

will vote for you. Most humans thrive in an atmosphere of competition , we all

want to increase our knowledge and be seen to be doing well , the points system

is a way of highlighting our little achievements and shows our progress , it is a

feel good thing , so come on guys be generous , the Buddha said that the

generous person has taken the first step on the path to enlightenment .

Hi Ray, has been a while... Should we not though be judicious in our voting? Is it wise to offer button-click pats on the back for trying or more helpful to those learning to vote up the best answer with respect to accuracy and helpfulness? - afowen, Mar 30, 2012
Looking around I see lots of votes on answers that are incorrect. Voting for comments that actually help people's learning identifies to those trying to learn those answers worth taking note of... - afowen, Mar 30, 2012
But if someone tries to help even though they actually are wrong, they still took the time and effort to help. They may not have known they were wrong. But they still tried. - 00cdfbd9, Mar 30, 2012
Being an ex teacher I remember well having children who were not in the top ten , but give them a star or an Elephant stamp and you could mark their progress from that point. - ray76, Mar 30, 2012
We all respond to a pat or a kind word afowen , even when we have not done well it is nicer to have a star. - ray76, Mar 30, 2012
Of course you are right Ray with regards to encouragement and you hit the nail on the head with 'kind word(s)'. If we really want to encourage people in a helpful way then let's take the time and make the effort to leave kind words and reserve voting... - afowen, Mar 30, 2012
... for answers that are actually helpful. That way it is easy to distinguish the better answers from the rest which helps learners to achieve their goal of bettering their Espanish. - afowen, Mar 30, 2012
I agree with everything you are saying Alf, but a vote can and may help as well , so why don't we all make a concerted effort to all of those things to cover all contingencies. Thanks mate. - ray76, Mar 30, 2012
If I am wrong then no harm done. - ray76, Mar 30, 2012

Thank you Kat and Katy for bringing this up! I always vote for people answering my questions, if only by way of showing that I have noticed their efforts. And in other people's threads I vote for whatever answers or questions I like ... and they don't have to be brilliant wink

I think of voting sort of like I think of tipping in a restaurant. I think that it is a vote for good effort and a vote of thanks. I don't vote for every response to my question. I vote for the best, most thoughtful, most accurate answers. I believe that voting will stop meaning something if you vote for poor effort or poor answers. On the other hand, it seems that a lot of people have stopped voting at all, because reputation points are growing at a much slower pace than before.

New members are a different story. Please vote for the new members not only to encourage them, but to give them the points to be able to fully participate in the forum

Please, remember to vote when you feel it is appropriate!

I agree, voting encourages the learning process, that was the purpose of us having that option in the first place.

Since we are discussing feedback, may I suggest that when a new person joins the group and ventures out of their comfort zone for the first time to post a legitimate question (in English/Spanish), that they not be treated with disrespect. No matter whether you like the question or not, if they are trying to join in and become a contributing member, they should be encouraged. If you don't like the question, or if you are having a bad day, it would be best not to say anything as opposed to 'putting them down' or trying to embarrass them.

Yes you are right Katrj and I agree with sanlee and katew ,who are people that I always get help of them. And the main point we should focus is on learning about new phrases and help each other if we make any mistake,I always accept corrections .Now I want to correct some katr `s spelling mistakes, mistakes is normal when we are learning .I have always said :Mistakes are my friends !!!!

Thank you, Kat. I have been noticing that people are not voting. A vote for an answer costs nothing and it encourages a person. Every new person should be welcomed to the forum with a vote, so they can send PM's. And a person who asks a good question or does a difficult thread deserves a vote. And Katydew is right, the person who asks the question needs to vote for the people who answer them as well.

This is great, Kat. Thanks again.

I see that my post has not that much good because people have not changed their voting patterns. I'm bumping this up just as a gentle reminder to please vote for those who are trying to do well, good questions, etc. Gracias.
