Monarch butterflies normally live only 4 or 5 weeks, however, every autumn a generation of about 60 million monarchs is born (in the Rocky Mountains) that will live for over 7 months. This generation will fly nearly 4,5000 kilometers in 1 1/2 months to the Sierra Madre Occidental in Mexico to hibernate. There they find the ideal conditions to develop and to be ready for mating in the spring.
One of the sanctuaries in Michoacán, Angangueo, is the sierra Chincua, which is declared Natural Patrimony of Humanity by Unesco. The place has become a tourist center with restaurants, craft shops and companies that organize walks on foot, by bike and on horseback in search of butterflies.
During this time the trees are turned into a huge conglomerate of orange colored butterflies and the roads are covered with orange carpets.

Females that survive the winter will undertake the return journey at the end of March, depositing their eggs to ensure a new generation to repopulate the areas from which they departed months ago.
But before they leave, people abundantly celebrate a 'Festival de la Mariposa Monarca' in February.

It was taken in Michoacán, México; at the "Santuario de las Mariposas Monarca - El Rosario"... =)
