medir

verb (to measure; to weigh)

Link: instructions post picture

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The sentence with the most votes will be crowned the Word of the Day winner!

Guidelines:

Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either. Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well. Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary). Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.) Have fun experimenting with Spanish.

Examples:

1. ¿Me mide tres libras de las chuletas de cerdo?

Can you measure me out three pounds of pork chops?

2. Debe medir los pros y los contras antes de hacer una decisión.

You should weigh the pros and cons before making a decision.

Tienen que tomar medidas estrictas para no pasar el tiempo con sus niños de esa manera.

They have to take strict measures not to spend the time with their children that way.

Love between a mother and her baby does not have any measure and never mind what kind of beings they are.

El amor entre una madre y su bebé no tiene ninguna medida y no importa qué tipo de seres sean ellos.

¿Deberíamos medir todos nuestros días en base a nuestro éxito? Do we have to measure all of our days by our success?

Hay que medir el silencio, hay que medir las palabras, sin quedarse ni pasarse medio a medio de la raya.

We must measure silence, we must measure the words, without putting little nor too much, exactly on the line.

"la torre". El sustantivo "torre" es femenino, por eso es "la torre", "esa torre que aparece en tu fotografía". - -cae-, Mar 25, 2012

  • Entre los carpinteros, hay un vieja y valiosa regla que dice, "mídelo dos veces y córtalo una vez;" quizás deberíamos todos medir lo que digamos en la misma manera.

  • Among carpenters, there is an old and valuable rule that says, "measure it twice and cut it once;" perhaps we should all measure what we say in the same manner.

Quizá yo usaría menos signos de puntuación y cambiaría un poquito el orden, nada más. - -cae-, Mar 25, 2012
"Entre los carpinteros hay una vieja y valiosa regla que dice "Mídelo dos veces y córtalo una vez". Quizá todos deberíamos medir lo que decimos de la misma manera". En este caso el indicativo "decimos" se ajusta mejor. Pero como lo escribiste está bien. - -cae-, Mar 25, 2012

The carpenter's saying: Measure twice, cut once.

First try:

Un dicho del carpentero: Mide dos veces, corta una.

Correction:

Un dicho del carpentero: Mídelo dos veces, córtalo solo una vez

Es difícil medir el éxito de una película muy esperada como "Los Juegos del Hambre." It is difficult to measure the success of a highly anticipated movie like "The Hunger Games." (It was a good movie though. And the books are even better.) enter image description here

El evento "ToughMudder" ocurrirá cerca de mi casa el fin de semana que viene. No sé si los participantes han medido los riesgos. Va a ser divertido pero bastante peligroso. Espero no hayan muchos heridos.

The event 'ToughMudder' is happening near my home next weekend. I don't know if the participants have measured the risks. It is going to be fun but quite dangerous. I hope there are not many injuries.

Bueno. Pero mi diccionario (Merriam-Webster) dice que 'participante' y 'herida' son feminino. Herida meaning injury, not herido/a meaning injured person. - jennysk, Mar 26, 2012
