In May I will be studying abroad in Segovia, Spain. I will be living with a family that only speaks Spanish, but I will not know my family until I meet them. All I know is that the mother of the home will greet me when I arrive. What would be an appropriate gift to take to show my thanks? thank you.

I have been visited by Spaniards and visited them and other Europeans. They often bring something unique to their region and I think that they expect something unique to your town or state. I live in Pennsylvania, where Hershey's chocolates are based and they LOVE American chocolates. Obviously, Godiva chocolates would be a good choice, too.

They will also appreciate some hand crafted item from your area. This is sometimes tough in the U.S. since everything in the stores seems to be made in China. A beautiful silk scarf, jewelry or perfume will be especially appreciated by your hostess. Every time she wears it she will think of you.

I am from Tennessee, so I'm not entirely sure what we have to offer that would be special to my hostess. Thank you for your wonderful advice! - Breanna1530, Mar 26, 2012
