automobile
My friends told me to use the spanish word carro in lieu of el coche which is an old fashioned word for car. Please advise.

It definitely makes me think of old fashioned cars when I hear the word "coche" In Colombia we never refer to a car as "coche" but as carro, automóvil or auto. I have personally never used it!

Seems to be regional... I live in Mexico and I have yet to hear the word "coche"... (I was told that it is used here, though.)
coche in mexico is known as a carriage.
It is more common to see "coche" in Spain, while "carro" is used typically in Latin America. Although both would be understood as "car," coche might literally be more like carriage or buggy.
