Somos meaning in English

Hi all I have just started learning Latin American Spanish with Rosetta Stone. Its a great program but I still need to compare it back to my native language. The word somos has come up a few times and I havent been able to find a proper answer for it.

The forms that it has been used in are at the beggining of the sentence and after Nosotros. Somos médicos y policías. Nosotros somos hombres y mujeres.

Some clarification would be great. Thanks!

When you conjugate a verb you change it to fit whoever it is 'doing' the verb or whoever is in the state that the verb refers to.

For instance in English you conjugate the verb 'to be' like this (in the present tense):

'I' am, 'you' are, we 'are', they 'are'

In Spanish there are two verbs that mean 'to be' - ser and estar (that's another whole story) but to answer your question you conjugate the verb 'ser' (in the present tense) as follows: you'll see your example on the fourth line down smile

(yo) - soy = I am (tú) - eres = you are (to be used informally) (él/ella/usted) - es = he/she/you (formal) is/are (nosotros) somos = we are (ellos/ustedes) son = they/you (plural) are

I hope that helps smile

Right, So this is from the verb Ser

Somos - We are someone. Somos maestros - We are teachers

The verb for we are doing something is Estar

Estamos - We are (___)ing.
