"Common Law Spouses"

I came across the word "mari-novios" today, with reference to common law spouses in Cuba. Has anyone heard of this, or does anyone have other terms? The dictionary terms seem a little cumbersome to me. Looking forward to some answers. It would appear that common law marriage is very common in Cuba.

Many thanks!

My mother is from Panamá and she told me that some Mexicans consider themselves to be married without being married legally. I would not be surprised if other hispanic cultures believed this too.

Thanks, yes I believe this is so. I'm looking for a word or phrase in Spanish for common law spouses. - Sheily, Mar 25, 2012

The best I have found is "matrimonio de hecho".
