You are using "this" to describe a noun.
In the sentence you provide...
Creo que este tipo de experiencia tiene muchas ventajas.
You are referring to the noun "el tipo." Since that noun is masculine, yes, you would use "este" as you have done.
La práctica is feminine, and therefore you would use "esta." In Spanish, adjectives change to accomodate number and gender of the noun they are describing.
