When to use por or para?

Hay muchos variedades de películas para/por ver.

This sentence sounds right when I use para but I'm not sure if it is para or por that I should use?

The correct word would be para. It would fall under "infinitive" You can remember the uses with these acronyms...

POR: What Time Does Ryan Expect Sarah To Come... Where Time Distance Reason/Motive Exchange Substitution Transportation Communication

PARA: Debbie Doubts Isabelle Only Uses Pink... Deadline Destination Infinitive Opinion Use Purpose

I would not use para here. It sounds like a literal translation. In the given example:

Hay una gran variedad de películas que ver. This would translate as there's a great variety of movies to see.

Hay una gran variedad de películas por ver. This would mean that there's a variety of movies that you are yet to see.

Is it not muchaS because I ahev said películaS and therefore they are both plural? - sinthu, Mar 18, 2012
No, because "mucha" is refering to the word "variedad" and that word is singular. And you shouldn't say "variedades", otherwise you will express that there are several clasifications, instead of say several movies. - -cae-, Mar 18, 2012

Otra opción que me suena bien: "hay una amplia selección de películas para ver"

para- as in this case "for" is before the infinitive verb "in order to see"
