Which is the proper way to say "I love dogs?"

I was trying to answer the question about liking dogs or cats, but I'm confused about 'gustar'. Should I say "Me gusto los perros" o "Me gustan los perros." I have looked up the verb gustar and found it both ways. I am confused. Thank you for your help.

¡Me encantan los perros! :) - Cordobesa, Mar 18, 2012
Gracias Cordobesa. ¿Pero no es encantar por amor de la gente? - 0095ca4c, Mar 19, 2012

When you use gustar, you conjugate to the object, not the subject. In other words, you, the subject, are single but since perros is plural, you would use the plural of gustar. So, "Me gustan los perros" would be correct. There is a lesson on spanishdict.com about gustar and verbs like them that are not conjugated to the subject. I don't know offhand what lesson it is, but it is clearly labeled as something like verbs like gustar.

Hope this helps!

Hola,

It would be correct to say: "Me gustan los perros." It's not me gusto because that translates to I find me pleasing, and then los perros after would not make any sense.

Hope this helped.

Some confusion could be coming from the form of "gustar" that is used in situations like this. In this case, the "reflexive" version of the verb is being employed, "gustarse". When you use these verbs, the reflexive pronouns are used, so in your example, it is "me gustan" and not "yo gusto". When you use the reflexive verb, the subject follows the verb, as in "Me gustan los perros", so here "the dogs" is the subject, and "me" is an indirect object.

When stated as "The dogs are pleasing to me" (rearranged slightly to make sense in English), this makes more sense.
