La persona a su lado era gordo/a.

OR

La persona al lado de él era gordo/a.

  • Either one is correct. If you were already talking about the person next to the fatty, it would be fine to say the first one. Although if you weren't already talking about the person, it would be more useful to use the second sentence, to specify that the person the fatty was next to was male.

  • "gordo/a" because it depends if the fat person was a guy or girl

  • You need "era" because it was in the past (was), and it needs to be from the root "ser" because it is a phyiscal trait of a person.

Was is past tense, if they are still fat which they probably are, I would use is (es) - albert-fabrik-, Mar 16, 2012

La persona a lado de él estaba gorda.

I think gorda is describing la persona so it is feminine. Is this correct?

Yo lo hubiera traducido igual, aunque tambien queda la frase La persona al lado de él era/estaba gorda/obesa. - xtiagox, Mar 16, 2012
