abbreviations

Question

I am creating a website, written in Spanish. Is it acceptable to shorten words to fit available space, as one would do in English? For example: numero de pedido = num de ped = NP In English: purchase order number = PO

I wouldn't use abbreviations unless:

1) they are standard and well-known: or

2) you have previously, on the same page, have mentioned the abbreviation, e.g., Número de Pedido (NP) blah, blah, blah.

Edit: I found 115 million hits for "número de pedido," translated as "order number," so you may be safe with "NP:"
