Learning spanish to communicate with a loved one

I fell in love with a Spanish girl when I was 10 years old , we were together

until I was away in the military , she sent me a " Dear John " to say she had met

someone else . I never forgot her so just over two years ago I searched the world

and found her . I decided that I would learn to speak Spanish before I saw her again ,

so I joined SD and here I am struggling my little grey cells off , I may have to wait until

my next lifetime before we meet and speak in Spanish.

Cardiff, I agree with everything Gringo said. I have a similiar situation to yours and have been living in Chile for around a year and a half.

Don't get discouraged at the beginning. It's going to be hard to understand and you will think you hardly recognize any spoken words but this goes away with time.

Definitely you will have good days and bad ones, some where you might just wanna give up completely but just realize it takes a good long while for your ears to adjust to the new sounds.

Have patience and good luck. I'm just now starting to feel comfortable with Spanish myself.

Not quite the same. I left the US to live in Mexico in 2007. I took a month of immersion spanish and then another 5 months of daily three hour classes. Soon after that I found a lady and we began dating and so on and so on. I lived there for four years in a family that spoke no English at all. It took about a year to really get comfortable that I was being understood and understanding most of what was being said. After that first year it gets easier and easier.

Immersion is by far the best way to learn. Good luck in whatever country you are in. PS its funny but I started to forget English words for things and would use the Spanish word on the rare occasions I would speak with someone in English.
