"Va continuar" instead of "va a continuar"

"Va continuar" instead of "va a continuar"

Hi, I have just heard on TV "(El) va continuar". Why did he say it without a "a", like this: "va a continuar"? Did he use slang? Is it correct speaking this way? Explanation necessary.

Thanks smile

Hi, Henry.

Do you think that you just heard "Va continuar" because the person spoke to fast to hear the second "a"? I know that I say "va a continuar" but I'm not sure that you'd even hear the second one.

Exactly! Mariana is right on!

  • When the last vowel of a word is the same as the first vowel of the next word, it could sound like it is not there. The correct expression is "Va a continuar" but it sounds like "Vacontinuar" Spanish sounds fast to you because your brain does not process Spanish the way it process English.
  • We, "Native Spanish speakers " initially think that Americans speaks too fast as well!

I agree with Mariana and Farallon. Although it sounds as "vacontinuar", "va a continuar" is the correct expression :) - Cordobesa, Mar 14, 2012
Let's compare it with English. Good morning! People actually say, "Goomorning! The "d" is there, so softly, that only those who think in English can hear it! The same thing happen in Spanish, that "a" is there, but only those who think in Spanish hear it. - farallon7, Mar 15, 2012
