What does "Son las cinco" mean in English?

Son las cinco = it is five o'clock, son = they are and las refers to the hours in the time 5 in this case so it is plural i.e. las, and cinco is = five literal translation is "they are five" but if it was one o'clock you would say "es la una" hope this helps you but you should start the Spanish lessons on this site to learn about numbers and time etc. and much more of course.
