"to apply for college", "to submit applications for college"

I'm writing an essay for one of my college's spanish classes. The topic is to write about what first made you interested in studying Spanish. I am trying to translate the following sentence:
"When the time came to apply for college..." OR "When the time came to submit applications for college..." (I'm not sure which sentence I prefer yet).
How might one say this in Spanish?
My guesses are:
- Cuando llegó el momento para presentar aplicaciones a las universidades...
- Cuando el momento llegó para solicitar el ingreso en las universidades....
- Cuando llegó el momento para aplicar a las universidades...
As you can see, I am a bit confused over what verb corresponds with "to apply". Any help is appreciated! Thank you in advance for your answers

Cuando llegó el momento, presenté las solicitudes de ingreso en las universidades.En México se oye mejor de éste modo.

I would use the verb "solicitar." Solicitar a universidades.
