It is just an idiom. The same way in the U.S. wives and husbands call their partners "honey"

In English we call it a "term of endearment"...and idiom is something else. - --Mariana--, Mar 8, 2012
@ farallon7 & mkilbride: I also have heard people in the US (aka English-speakers) do that with their own children. "Hey (little) mama"/"Hey little man"...it happens here, too. Varies by person. - Goldie_Miel, Mar 8, 2012

Like Farallon says, it's like calling someone "Honey" or "Baby" or "Sweetie."

Just a few names that people use in Latin America:

Mamita

Papito

Papi

Mija / Mijo

Guapa / guapo
