The dictionary is absolutely the best place to look up words and find the gender. Look to the list of examples to find out whether we use "el" or "la" because there are exceptions.

Madre (feminine noun) la madre patria -> the motherland

Padre (masculine noun) es el padre de la lingüística moderna he is the father of modern linguistics

Agua (feminine noun) claro como el agua -> as clear as day

Mano (feminine noun) lavarse las manos -> to wash one's hands

"madre" is a feminine noun, so you use "la". The quickest way to find that out is to look it up in the translate section. It will tell you what gender a noun has.

most nouns ending in "a" are feminine and therefore take the "la" or "una " articles. there are a few exceptions like "problema" which is masculine - el problema .

but they are easy to remember. "agua " is another one .

there are also a few nouns ending in "o" which are not masculine . for example "la mano " also easy to remember
