Music from Andalucia! Bulerías
Last time we heard Gilberto Santarosa give us an example of salsa. Here is a song from Andalucia, Spain, known as a "bulería" sung by Maria Carrasco, who began at eight years old and is very famous in Andalucia. I have included a link to the lyrics. She actually sings very clearly. Enjoy!

Incredible!
I'm listening to music that I ordinarily wouldn't be exposed to...thanks to you.
Thanks for sharing this.
This music reminds me that I learned when I went there that Christopher Columbus' and other explorers' boats left from Sevilla in Andalucia. From there they sailed to the Canary Islands where they had camps to teach the conquistadors how to survive in the new world. From there they travelled to the Caribbean, Central and South America. This is why the music, traditional dress and accent of the Spanish-speaking new world resembles that of Andalucia.
I also learned recently that the people of Andalucia have been greatly discriminated against in Spain. As recently as in the 1960's there wasn't enough money in the region for adequate services, so opportunities for education were limited. As a result, apparently it is not unusual to find people in Andalucia their 50's today that are not literate.
The music of this region seems to express the suffering of the people of this region of Spain. For this reason, in many ways to me it resembles the Mississipi delta blues in the U.S. in that you can take everything from a people, but if they still have a voice they will sing.
