Hay in preterite

There were not a large variety of shops.
The preterite form of Hay is Hubo but it is not used very often. The imperfect form is Había and it is used and is what you would use in your sentence.
No había mucha variedad de las tiendas.
I think it would be: No había un gran variedad de tiendas.
