bastante

(adjective) enough, sufficient; quite a lot of, quite

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish sentence (and include the English translation as well). Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The sentence with the most votes will be crowned the Word of the Day winner!

Guidelines:

  • Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either.
  • Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well.
  • Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary).
  • Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.)
  • Have fun experimenting with Spanish!

My examples

1: ¿Tuviste bastante comida?

Did you get enough to eat?

2: Habían bastantes perros en el parque hoy.

There were quite a lot of dogs at the park today.

No habría bastante gracias nunca para decir a rac1 y FigueroaGaray para proveer este hilo cada día.

Corrections:

Nunca habría bastantes "gracias" para darles a rac1 y a FigueroaGaray por proveernos este hilo cada día".

There would never be enough thank-yous to say to rac1 and FigueroaGaray for providing this thread everyday.

Indeed it is!! - rac1, Mar 5, 2012

My thoughts 'entirely'! F.G. - jool, Mar 5, 2012
While we are on bastante, when someone says, 'basta!' does that translate as "That's enough!" and is it always rude? - katydew, Mar 5, 2012
I think it's italian, Katy, and certainly means enough. In Italy it's not rude but maybe it is in Spanish.. - annierats, Mar 5, 2012
I've never had the pleasure (or misfortune) to see them on stage. Um.. who are these people? - cheskasullivan, Mar 5, 2012
It's a so-called reality show in which a bunch of kids from the New York/New Jersey area live in a house for whatever amount of weeks and, well, hilarity/drama ensues. It's basically, "The Real World: New Jersey," but with extra sex, booze, and idiocy. - FigueroaGaray33, Mar 5, 2012
¿Ellos son las personas del show "Jersey Shore", no? Me pregunto porque no tengo un televisor (y no lo quiero). - Xocoyote, Mar 5, 2012
Correcto, xocoyote. "Jersey Shore" indeed. - FigueroaGaray33, Mar 5, 2012
I wasn´t sure about the quite. There is an Interesting use of basante in SD dictionary: 'es basante f'ácil´ or it is quite easy. ¨Ya hemos tenido bastante¨ or We have had quite enough. - bandit51jd, Mar 5, 2012
who are they? - Rey_Mysterio, Mar 5, 2012
I guess they'll have their 'Andy Warhol' moment...and then get a 'job' !!! - jool, Mar 6, 2012
Now, Now. They have a purpose. Go to "Vulgar" in the dictionary to see that photo. - mikecarroll, Mar 6, 2012
Now, now. They do serve a purpose. Just find "vulgar" in the dictionary and the above photo - mikecarroll, Mar 6, 2012

Si hay bastante dinero para cada persona en el mundo, ¿Por qué no hay bastante de ello....en mi cuenta bancaria?

If there is sufficient money for every person in the world. Why is there not enough of it ...in my bank account?!!

Perfect, but you need a comma instead of a period after 'mundo/world,' and you don't need to capitalize "bank account." - FigueroaGaray33, Mar 5, 2012
Thanks (again) F.G. Regards...Jool. - jool, Mar 5, 2012
I'm just beginning to understand the constructions, de él or de ella so I appreciate seeing this! - bandit51jd, Mar 5, 2012

"¡¡Dejáme!" is informal. "Sus (not "su") mentiras" is formal. You have to be consistent with one or the other. - FigueroaGaray33, Mar 5, 2012
Oops, I meant de sus mentiras :p - cheskasullivan, Mar 5, 2012
How do I make it informal? Is it "Tengo bastante de tus mentiras"? Gracias! - cheskasullivan, Mar 5, 2012
It's either, "¡Déjame! Tengo bastante de tus mentiras," or, "¡Déjeme! Tengo bastante de sus mentiras." - FigueroaGaray33, Mar 5, 2012
Or ¡Largate! - gringojrf, Mar 5, 2012
Thank you, gringo ^^ - cheskasullivan, Mar 5, 2012
I couldn't figure out how "mientras" meant lies. Oh, my, their are two different words! "Mentiras" means lies! Way, cool! - bandit51jd, Mar 5, 2012

The line between enough and too much is very fine.

La línea entre bastante y demasiado es muy fina.

"en el escenario" or "en escena" ("en la escena" is "in the scene") - FigueroaGaray33, Mar 5, 2012
Thank you, FigueroaGara. And what the difference between "en el escenario" and "en escena"? And why in "en el escenario" we use definite article but in "en escena" we don't? - kat9wa, Mar 5, 2012
"En escena" is a set phrase that means on any stage, meaning, she's good enough of a singer to sing professionally, and go onstage and sing. "En el escenario" is an actual, particular stage. "La escena" could be a scene or the theatre industry. - FigueroaGaray33, Mar 5, 2012
Gracias por tu explicación! - kat9wa, Mar 5, 2012
I´ve been trying to learn when and when not to use the Spanish articles. Does this have something to do with ¨en el escenario¨ being a concrete noun, specific, and actual, whereas ¨en escena¨ - bandit51jd, Mar 5, 2012
is an abstract noun and very general so it doesn´t need the article? - bandit51jd, Mar 5, 2012
Kat9wa, have you seen the English Word of the Day yet! It´s really good to practice English sentences. Welcome to the forum! - bandit51jd, Mar 5, 2012

Hay siempre que bastante de un hábitat para vivir, este canguro de árbol sobrevivirá en los bosques húmedos/tropicales de Papúa Nueva Guinea, Papúa Occidental o Australia.

As long as there is enough of a habitat to live in, this tree kangaroo will survive in the rain forests of Papua New Guinea, West Papua or Australia.
