Definite and indefinite articles?

Question

My question is about when to use indefinite and definite articles. We haven't learned when or where to use them other than in vocabulary really and I'd like to know how they work.

I noticed my problem with this when I was doing a graph in Spanish today and I was trying to label the axes. I said, "numero de los especies" and "clase de los especies." In English you can just say "number of species" and "type of species." Is the definite article kind of omitted in the understanding? Because I read it as "kind of the species." :/

I would use "número de especies" y "tipos de especies"
