Niños are any children while hijos are sons or sons and daughters.

Difference between ''hijos'' and ''ninos'' is that ''hijos'' son 'los hijos y hijas;;, thus son and daughter, the meaning of which is more specified, while ninos, are just, small children, so when we want to talk about ''children of parents X,'', independent of age, we'd rather say ''hijos'', ninos also may mean, babies, infants, Ok can be used for children (son and daugher of parents X), but too young in age.. THANKS!!
