Who, what, or where am I? #03

Question

Although they have been trying to domestize me for over 20 years now, I am still being sold as an 'exotic pet'. And non-wild coloured 'colleagues' of mine are still exceptions .... What am I? And where is my natural habitat?

Hint: I was once described as "having the body of a guinea pig, the head of a rat and the tail and posture of a squirrel."

You're a chinchilla and you're a native of the Andes mountains. You can be also be found in Bolivia, Peru and Chile.

I am indeed a degu. I should happily live in the Andes mountains of Chili and Peru.
I have orange teeth. And when I flee from enemies I am capable of tearing of my tail to hopefully mislead my enemy ... but the tail never grows back ;-(
