Do infinitives really translate "to" do somthing?

Do infinitves really translate "to" do somthing.Example, trabajar "to work" or is it just "work"?

But usually infinitives are "to ____". Quiero trabajar. = I like to work.

Hello Garciamarquez. Yes 'Infinitives' always mean 'to do' something. The word 'work' on its own would be: el trabajo. An example of using trabajar in a simple sentence, would be "Quiero trabajar". Although it looks as though it is out on its own, it still means 'to work'. Regards...Jool.

Translated "I like to work". This is the most common translation of the infinitive although in certain situations it can be translated differently. - gringojrf, Feb 27, 2012
