Común:

(adjective) common; mutual, communal; ordinary, average

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish and English sentences. Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The sentence with the most votes will be crowned the Word of the Day winner!

Guidelines:

  • Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either.
  • Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well.
  • Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary).
  • Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.)
  • Have fun experimenting with Spanish!

My examples

1: Se conocen a través de un amigo común.

They know each other through a mutual friend.

2: Su interés en los deportes es lo único que tienen en común.

Their interest in sports is all they have in common.

When I was little, sparrows were to be seen everywhere. Nowadays they are rare birds.

Good sentence, but you forgot to use "común". Also, "querer" should be in the imperfect and you don't need the "a" afterwards. - Paralee, Feb 24, 2012

Ayer no era un día común. Descubrí que al comienzo de febrero mi banco retiró dinero de mi cuenta de ahorros en lugar de ingresar por error y después pasó tres horas en el teléfono porque mi Internet no funcionaba. Hoy deseo un día más común wink

Yesterday wasn't an ordinary day. I found out that at the beginning of february my bank withdrew money from my savings account instead of paying it in by mistake and then I spent three hours on the phone because my Internet didn't work. Today I wish for a more ordinary day wink

¡Qué horrible! Just a few small corrections: "Ayer *fue* un día", "mi banco *sacó* dinero", "después *pasé* tres horas" - Paralee, Feb 24, 2012
Jaja. Your story sounds horrible, not your sentences. You did a great job! - Paralee, Feb 24, 2012
Thank you for the corrections Paralee! Luckily that day is gone :D - racoonka, Feb 26, 2012

"¿Cómo es de común es que la gente va de pescar en tu zona?" - That's a tough one! "how" + an adjective in questions can often be translated using "cómo es de" + adjective (agreeing with the noun) - Paralee, Feb 24, 2012

Thanks for all the corrections people. Katydew4 I'am agree with that comment, sharks are smart and they could make a relation between humans and easy food. - xtiagox, Feb 23, 2012
