La sabiduría:

wisdom; knowledge, learning; good sense, prudence

Use today's Word of the Day in your own Spanish and English sentences. Try to use the word in a completely new way and vote on the sentences you like best. The sentence with the most votes will be crowned the Word of the Day winner!

Guidelines:

  • Write sentences at least 5 words long, but don't write a paragraph either.
  • Write your Spanish sentence, but include the English translation as well.
  • Make the corrections suggested by other users and moderators in the comments section (try not to use personal pronouns unless absolutely necessary).
  • Use your own words! (Don't use a translator, copy from a book, use song lyrics, etc.)
  • Have fun experimenting with Spanish!

My examples

1: Mi abuelo es una persona de gran sabiduría.

My grandfather is very wise.

2: Pusieron en duda la sabiduría del plan.

They cast doubt on the wisdom of the plan.

Tengo la sabiduría suficiente para saber que no soy tan intelligente, y tengo la intelligencia suficiente para saber que no soy tan sabia.

I have enough wisdom to know that I am not that smart, and I have enough intelligence to know that I am not that wise.

El conocimiento habla, pero la sabiduría escucha.

Knowledge speaks, but wisdom listens.

A veces personas dicen los búhos tienen la sabiduría acaba de porque tienen ojos en frente de sus cabezas. Sometimes people say that owls have wisdom simply because they have eyes in the front of their heads.

Correction: A veces se dicen que los búhos tienen la sabiduría acaba de porque tienen ojos en frente de las cabezas.

Yes, very cute! A few suggestions: instead of "personas dicen" you can use the impersonal se "A veces, se dicen que..." And when talking about body parts, use the definite article instead of the possessive pronoun: "en frente de las cabezas." - Paralee, Feb 21, 2012
Thanks Paralee. I will make the changes. - kdrinning, Feb 21, 2012

La sabiduría sólo es sólo una pieza del rompecabezas; se necesita el conocimiento se necesita, también.

Wisdom is only a piece of the puzzle; knowledge is needed, too.

Good job, Bandit. It just sounds a little directly translated. Switch "es sólo" and put "se necesita" in front of "el conocimiento." - Paralee, Feb 21, 2012

Muy pocos líderes tienen la sabiduría verdad, y tienen que tratar de vencer la ignorancia de los otros.

Very few leaders have true wisdom, and they have to try to overcome the ignorance of the others.

La sabiduría muchas veces es aprendido desde errores."Muchas veces, la sabiduría es aprender de los errores." Wisdom is often learned from mistakes

Muy bien, clinker. Just a bit directly translated sounding. "Muchas veces, la sabiduría es aprender de los errores." When a verb functions as a noun, you use the infinitive, unlike in English. - Paralee, Feb 21, 2012

There is often a conflict between good sense and fun.

Muchas veces, hay un conflicto entre la sabiduría y la diversión.

This TV program shows, in a mocking and full of stereotypes way, that intelligence, knowledge and wisdom are different things.

Este programa de televisión muestra de una manera burlona y llena de estereotipos que inteligencia, conocimiento y sabiduría son cosas distintas.

"TV show shows" is not incorrect; but it is a little more fluent to say, "TV program shows". - bandit51jd, Feb 20, 2012
I expected some corrections in that sense but I wanted to be sure. Thank you bandit51jd. - xtiagox, Feb 20, 2012
Your sentense is very good. One small thing, you need to have commas around the prepositional phrase, "in a mocking and fulll of sterotypes way." - Leatha, Feb 20, 2012
Great suggestions, everyone! - Paralee, Feb 21, 2012

A veces la sabiduría se obtiene a través de errores y a veces duele esos errores. wink Sometimes wisdom is gained through error and sometimes those errors hurt. smile

¡Es verdad! A few suggestions to make it sound less directly translated: "A veces se obtiene la sabiduría..." And conjugate "doler" to plural "errores." - Paralee, Feb 21, 2012
